Kaleidographs

Kaleidoscope photos are a fun sort of picture to make as a change of pace from the more representational photography most of us usually do. You don’t even need a particularly sophisticated camera to take the original photograph, any point and shoot camera will do the job.
A kaleidoscope photo starts out as a somewhat ordinary looking photograph that achieves its graphic potential only when it is mirror imaged to create a four-part symmetrical image that is reminiscent of what you may see when looking through a kaleidoscope. The construction of the finished image is a straight-forward, step-by-step process. But the secret to stunning, original images is in the selection and photography of appropriate subjects.
When you are photographing for kaleidoscope images you should look for subjects with strong graphic potential. You want a subject with good lighting contrast and interesting shapes and colors that fill the frame of your composition. Don’t feel that you need to hold your camera perfectly horizontal or vertical when capturing your subject, frequently the best graphics compositions result from tilting the camera at an angle to allow subject lines to grow from a corner and move diagonally across the frame. Our favorite subjects are mostly from nature; including trees, branches, leaves, and flowers. Many of our students have achieved success with a
variety of other subjects such as: rocks and rock strata, portions of automobiles, and even sections of the human body. The choice of subject is yours.
